I work at Discount Tire and before I started working there, I had no idea how to tell how old a tire was. Now that I know a bit of information on tires, I try to answer any questions people have about them. I can honestly tell you that what the people in this video are talking about is real. Every tire that comes from a large manufacturer is sprayed with certain chemicals that help prolong the life of the tire (i.e. reduce heat, dryness ect). I can also tell you that what the reporter says about the date being placed on the inner side of the wheel is a lie. It is and has been policy among many of the leading tire installment facilities to specifically place the DOT date facing outwards. I know for a fact that at Discount Tire, we inspect all tires we install before the customer drives away to make sure the date is facing outwards; if it isn't the Tire Tech (person who mounted the tire on the wheel), gets to take it back off the wheel and put it on right. Also, all symmetrical tires have the DOT date on 1 side of the tire and all directional tires have the date on both sides.
Just thought I would add a few points =)
P.S. I know this is an old thread.
